Almost every failed sump pump we are called to had been sitting unused since the last wet season. Do this now rather than finding out during a storm.
- Lift the lid and look in the pit. Clear out gravel, silt, or debris around the intake.
- Slowly pour a few gallons of water into the pit with a bucket until the float rises.
- The pump should switch on by itself, empty the pit, and switch off cleanly without chattering or short cycling.
- Go outside and confirm water is actually coming out of the discharge, well away from the foundation.
If it did not start, ran but moved nothing, kept running after the pit emptied, or you heard a hum with no water moving, it needs service before the next storm. A pump that fails this test in July is an inconvenience. The same pump failing in April is a finished basement.

Your Pump Fails Exactly When You Need It Most
This is the part homeowners underestimate. The heaviest rain of the year is also when the power is most likely to go out. A sump pump with no backup is a device that stops working at the precise moment groundwater peaks.

The Discharge Line Is Where Winter Gets You
A sump pump can be in perfect condition and still flood your basement if the water has nowhere to go. In Southeast Michigan the discharge line freezes, and it freezes at exactly the wrong time, when a thaw sends meltwater into a system whose outlet is still iced shut.
- The pump keeps running and the pit stays full. That combination almost always means a blocked or frozen discharge, not a bad pump.
- Slope and length matter. A line that holds standing water freezes solid. It needs to drain fully between cycles.
- Discharge point matters. Water dumped too close to the foundation runs straight back into the drain tile and returns to the pit, which is a loop that runs the pump to death.
- Check the outlet before winter. Clear the end of the line, make sure it is not buried under mulch, snow, or landscaping, and confirm it still drains freely.
If your pump is cycling constantly in winter or the pit is not clearing, have the discharge checked before you replace a pump that may be working fine.
What Actually Matters in a Replacement

Submersible or pedestal
Submersible pumps sit in the pit, run quieter, and handle debris better. Pedestal pumps keep the motor above the water and are easier to service. Most Metro Detroit basements get a submersible.

Capacity, not just horsepower
Horsepower alone tells you little. What matters is how much the pump moves against the height it has to lift and the length of the run. A pump that is oversized short cycles. Undersized, it never catches up.

Switch type
The float switch is the most common failure point in the whole system. Switch design and how it sits in the pit matter more to reliability than the brand on the housing.

Check valve and pit
A working check valve stops discharged water falling back into the pit, which prevents short cycling. Pit size and a proper lid affect performance, humidity, and safety.
Why Metro Detroit Basements Take On Water
- Clay soil and a high water table. Much of Macomb and Oakland County sits on heavy clay that drains slowly. Water does not soak away, it sits against your foundation and finds the path of least resistance.
- Spring thaw stacked on spring rain. Frozen ground cannot absorb meltwater, so it runs sideways. Add a April storm on top and groundwater rises fast.
- Older drain tile. Footing drains in older homes silt up over decades, so water that should be intercepted and routed to the pit finds the floor instead.
- Combined and surcharged sewers. Parts of the older regional system carry both storm and sanitary flow. During heavy rain the public main can surcharge, and the lowest opening in your house is where that shows up. A sump pump does not solve that particular problem, which is worth understanding before you buy one.
What a Sump Pump Will Not Fix
Basement water has more than one cause, and a pump only addresses one of them. Knowing which problem you have saves you from buying the wrong solution.

It does not stop a sewer backup
A sump handles groundwater. Sewage coming up through a floor drain is a sanitary line problem, and the defense against that is a backwater valve and a healthy sewer lateral, not a bigger pump.

It does not seal a leaking foundation
Water entering through a wall crack or at the wall-floor joint needs the crack addressed or proper drainage installed. A pump can only remove what actually reaches the pit.
Waterproofing -
It does not fix bad exterior drainage
Downspouts discharging at the foundation and grading that slopes toward the house send water straight down against the wall. That is a yard problem, and no pump size compensates for it.

It does not work without drain tile
A pit with no drain tile feeding it only collects what happens to reach that one spot. If your basement takes water in a corner far from the pit, the collection system is the issue.
Where Your Discharge Is Allowed to Go
Many Metro Detroit municipalities prohibit connecting sump pump or footing drain discharge into the sanitary sewer, and several communities in this region have run disconnection programs over the years. Sump water is groundwater, and sending it into the sanitary system contributes to the same surcharging that backs sewage into basements during heavy rain.
Rules vary by city, and so do requirements about how far discharge must be from the foundation and whether it can cross onto a neighboring property. That combination usually points at the discharge rather than the pump. A blocked or frozen line, or a check valve stuck closed, means the pump works and the water has nowhere to go. In winter a frozen discharge is the most likely cause, and it is urgent, because the pump is running against a closed outlet.
